New York Grant Resources

New York has always attracted bold and brave adventurers. The Explorers Club Headquarters in NYC is a place where intrepid travelers from New York showcase the delights found on their journeys.

Just as the Explorers Club Headquarters offers a treasure trove of artifacts and exciting stories from their explorations, we’ve got a wealth of information to help you find the golden currency (grants!) for today’s ever-evolving nonprofit sector. Aha, you might ask, but where to begin? That’s where we come in! To get you started, many top giving foundations and corporations based in New York appear in the “New York Funding Sources” section below.

For even more funder information, including which ones to approach and how to approach them, sign up for our Grantsmanship Training Program. Comprehensive and inspiring, this 5-day workshop is packed with knowledge and tools. Getting grants is competitive and this class not only gives you lots of info but also the actual experience of writing and reviewing grant proposals created in class. Often called “the gold standard” this training will help your application get funded instead of being sent off into the wilderness.

Three steps you can take toward success with your grant proposals:

First, do the research for New York’s funding sources. Each one is different, so it’s important to find and apply only for grants for which your organization is eligible. Don’t just chase the money—be sure the grant opportunity fits your organization’s mission and expertise. You’re more likely to succeed when your organization aligns with the funder. Sound overwhelming? Don’t worry—we’ll help you figure it out!

Second, submit a compelling grant proposal! Learn how, during our dynamic training. Or if that’s not workable, read our textbook, Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing, which will step you through the process. It’s the industry standard and is $45 on our website. While you’re there, check out other exciting and helpful free resources including articles, mini-webinars, blogs and podcasts.

Third, remember that securing grant funds is just one part of the funding picture. The strength of your grant management and tracking plan can also make or break your funding request. The PowerPack, at the bottom of our homepage, www.tgci.com, is a free download. Get all kinds of grant info, including grant management tips.

Writing for Impatient Readers
We have written the proposal. We believe it’s the most well-thought-out plan, carefully designed to have a huge impact on our target population. Yet if the reader’s mind wanders after a few minutes, or worse—they yawn—our proposal may be in trouble.
A Quick Review of Logic
As we state in our textbook, Grantsmanship: Program Planning & Proposal Writing, the grant proposal is a logical argument for funding. The logic of the the proposal flows from the logic of your Program design. You see a problem and you think of a way to fix that problem. The solution comes logically from your understanding of the problem. If there is a break in the logic, the program plan will appear to have flaws. This is especially critical when you are writing the grant request. The funder will know if there are flaws in the logic, and it will weaken your proposal.
Let's Talk About the Problem, Part 2
(or The Lack of a Program is Not the Problem) Planning programs proactively makes good sense. We plan programs that are compatible with our organizational mission, capabilities, and community needs. Sometimes, though, in real life a funding opportunity lands in our inbox and there may be pressure to apply. We will need to shift to reactive planning—not the most desirable approach.
